About South San Francisco

Birthplace of biotech

South San Francisco, San Mateo County

Genentech set up shop in a South San Francisco warehouse in 1976, and the city has called itself the birthplace of biotechnology ever since. Hundreds of life science companies now fill the old industrial land east of Highway 101, around Oyster Point. West of the freeway, Grand Avenue remains the traditional main street, with a city hall dedicated in 1920.
